dad had such a zest for life and adventure, his sleepy home village was never going to hold him,so aged 21 he left for the bright lights of london, serving 20 years in the london ambulance service, where he was commended several times, his desire to help and serve other people always shone through and his common sense approach to life made him dependable under pressure.the call of adventure pulled him again, leaving everything to start a new life in south africa in 1983,returning in 1985 to his home village to care for his dad,and although he re settled to live the remainder of his life where he was born and raised,he still had the adventure bug, travelling again to south africa, israel, and over the last 8 years making regular trips to fuerteventura to spend time in the sun and with me and his beloved grandaughter gemma.
he had an amazing relationship with gem, shes heartbroken to have lost her grandy.he saw her grow up from being a baby right through to the stunning 24 year old she is now, he was so very proud of her, always at the ringside when she was competing her ponies, always involved.in later years they would banter on like close friends, play pool, dominoes, scrabble, always trying to beat each other!
dad was a very intelligent man,so well read, if dad didnt know, he wouldnt rest until he did!
he loved a good conversation, with a love of history and was known by all for his love of sunshine, never happier than when the weather was good and he could sit out with a beer!
he was also always very smart, travelling in his "travelling suit"complete with tie,he wanted people to think well of the english,so always travelled smart!
he was also a brilliant mechanic, there wasnt much he couldnt fix,it made him cross when all the new computer, sealed units started to come into production,he never agreed with all that at all!
i like to think that because of him i also have a spirit of adventure, a sense of loyalty and right and wrong,i wouldnt be the person iam today without him.
dads passing has left such a hole in mine and gems lives,i,ve lost my best friend as well as my dad,he was truly a star, with such a strong personality, the kind you only meet once in a lifetime.
his other great love was buddy holly songs,
so rave on dad
till we meet again,i,ll always listen out for you when i dont know what to do,i know your,ll keep me right!
never forgotten
